How ADHD Medication Works
Using Medication As A Therapy For ADHD
Because of the way ADHD often manifests itself, with fidgeting, lack of attention, being constantly distracted and having energy to spare it comes as a surprise to many that many medications for ADHD are based on amphetamines. Amphetamines are stimulants which in neurotypical people actually cause many or all of the behaviours which they tend to control in people with ADHD.
How Come?
People with ADHD can concentrate for hours on something which is interesting, constantly changing or stimulating in some way. On the other hand they get bored, frustrated or irritable when challenged with something boring, repetitive or mundane. Amphetamines ‘fix’ this by making the mind concentrate extremely hard on the thing which would otherwise be boring or lacklustre.
Using stimulants isn’t without its drawbacks. They are among the most addictive drugs and have an extremely strong effect on the heart and nervous system. They encourage repetitive behaviour, often manifesting itself in lip biting, teeth grinding, and constant activity in the extremities.
Under suitable medical supervision many of the side effects can be mitigated. However, you should be aware that all drug therapies come with potential health risks and consequently should be considered carefully before commencement.
